Nada is the flow of sound, yoga is the union that is achieved by tuning in to the sound so keenly that one may merge with the infinite. Sounds rather radical, yet it is precisely what Nada yoga can do.
In Hatha Yoga Pradipika it is stated:
“Mind is the ruler of the senses, prana is the ruler of the mind. Dissolution is the lord of the prana and that dissolution (Laya) is the basis of Nada.”
It begins with a subtle sound vibration, which is heard internally as opposed to being heard externally. This sound is called Anahata nada which is Sanskrit for 'unstruck','unhurt' or 'unbeaten' sound. This cosmic sound is produced without any friction as it is not actively struck like one might beat a drum or pluck a guitar string. The sound has the capacity to recalibrate the body on a vibrational level which can lead to more subtle states of consciousness that may develop into states of dissolution where the very idea of 'I' disintegrates and what remains is unity or oneness.
In my experience, it has allowed me to witness my reabsorption into the whole, of being merged with the universe, perceived as waveform where all fundamental truths were unveiled. At a conscious level, I’ve seen it deeply purify my subconscious and take me to the most sublime states I have ever known. It also functions as a key to lucid dreaming and even dream yoga. It has been the conduit of the grandest benevolence and healing.
Scientifically speaking it is a process of resonance, this understanding becomes resoundingly clear from accruing the specific resonance of the nada within one’s self. This understanding of resonance has the ability to touch every aspect of life as the energetic signature of all things become more apparent and perceivable.
The nada has sattwic or purifying effects. When the relationship with nada is established in meditation, it purifies the chakras and paves the path for Shakti to ascend and unite with Shiva, leading to what Swami Satyananda Saraswati who authored Kundalini Tantra, describes as “an explosion in the brain as the dormant or sleeping areas start blossoming like flowers.”
This is what is commonly referred to as a kundalini awakening, where the body releases a huge amount of primordial energy from the base of the spine up to the brain. This awakening is not for the faint of heart as it comes on like an earthquake as it carries the fuel for the blossoming of consciousness. It can be terrifying and it can also be blissful but what is more important in my opinion is what occurs afterwards, which is the descent of kundalini which carries effects and abilities that alter one's capacities for the better. It is an extraordinary journey into self and beyond.
The primary way is by energetic initiation which is an esoteric transmission from teacher to student. This teacher and this school in Rishikesh offer such initiations to mature & committed aspirants.ATMAN Federation which has schools worldwide offers it as part of their year-long course. There is also a 10-day Silent Meditation Retreat where one can be guided in the use of nada without an initiation.
